Film software users 'will pay the price'
Thu Jul 29 2010 11:39Those using film software may suffer following the decision to scrap the UK Film Council.
People using film software could suffer following the decision to axe the UK Film Council, the Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union (BECTU) has suggested. The film union, which represents a number of people working in film production, distribution and exhibition, has expressed concern the move will damage the future of the industry and create the kind of waste the decision intends to stop.
Martin Spence, BECTU assistant general secretary, said: "This decision is economically illiterate and culturally philistine. Film is an export success story: we sell British production skills throughout the world."
He added the film industry and the thousands of people working in it will pay the price.
Oscar-nominated actor Liam Neeson - currently promoting his latest movie the A-Team - has also added his voice to the debate calling the decision "deplorable".
Last week, the UK Film Council launched its Annual Statistical Yearbook, which indicated British cinema was in good health.
