Tough times may be ahead for those using film software in the UK.

Those making use of film software for independent movies may face tough times ahead, the UK Film Council has said.

Figures released as part of its first fully digital statistical yearbook indicated the number of feature films funded solely in the UK in 2009 was 71, a slight decline on the 77 in 2008.

"Overall it's clear that British cinema has been weathering the global recession well," said UK Film Council chief executive John Woodward.

He suggested some sectors were "firing on all cylinders" but added it is becoming more difficult to finance smalller, independently-produced British features.

However, there were some positive signs for the British movie industry, helped by the success of Slumdog Millionaire, indie films took 8.2 per cent of the UK and 2.3 per cent of the global market share.

Film software may soon be in use for Daniel Radcliffe's first movie role since filming the final Harry Potter movie.

Radcliffe is set to play young lawyer Arthur Kipps in the movie adaptation of Susan Hill's best-selling novel - The Woman in Black.
