Toy Story 3 and Shrek Forever After are set to go head-to-head in a ratings battle.

Two animated films are set to go head-to-head in a box-office battle over the coming weeks.

Film software will have played a part in the creation of both Toy Story 3 and Shrek Forever After and although the previous instalments of both films have proved popular this is the first time the two franchises have hit screens at the same time.

Writing for The Telegraph, Marc Lee suggests that Pixar's Toy Story 3 - the sequel to 1999's Toy Story 2 - has been "worth the 11-year wait".

Production costing software may have played a part in the filmmaking process for Pixar, who the writer suggests has brought the "magic touch" to each of its movies - including The Incredibles and Monsters Inc.

In the UK Shrek Forever After is released on July 2nd, while Toy Story 3 hits cinema screens on July 19th.

Toy Story 3 received its UK premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
